Healthy Skin, Hair and Nails

As I travel demonstrating the Creative Feet I keep getting asked the same questions regarding my appearance, such as.

“Your skin looks amazing, what are you doing?”
“You look younger than you did 5 years ago, why?”
“Your hair is so thick and long, I wish my hair would look like that.”

If you would have asked me 5 years ago, if I thought people would be saying these things, I’d say with certainty. “ABSOLUTELY NOT.”

What started as a quest to not lose all of my hair, became a change in lifestyle that continues to surprise me everyday. I have more stamina, my hair is thick and long. In-fact, my hair is longer than it’s been since I was age 16! I can’t say that it’s one thing or even two that has made this change but a compilation of several changes I’ve made that as a combination has changed my appearance and my overall well-being and mood.

Hair-Loss and/or Breakage
I found that an under-functioning Thyroid was a key factor to reversing this. I didn’t have any particular condition, my thyroid tested in the “normal-low” range and that, explained my physician, did not require any treatment. However, a conversation I had with a Chiropractor years back kept playing in my head. This doctor, years ago had me hold my arms up in front of me and then pushed down on my hands; after doing so, he said I needed Thyroid food supplements. Now, given this was many, many years back and my mind was not as open to homeopathic medicine as it is now, I discarded the statement as “they are just trying to sell me this stuff”. However, I did in-fact purchase and attempt to use it until my “little girl” inside me said. “This stuff smells terrible and it probably doesn’t even work.” So, I behaved like a child and stopped taking it and am not sure how my life would have evolved had a taken it as prescribed.

Years passed and life continued to be a struggle with food and weight from allergies that I’ve talked about throughout this blog, so to speed things up, this post is to share the products I’ve adopted as part of my daily regimen for those of you wanting to know.

Atomodine: $15-$18
Liquid Seaweed drops full of Iodine – this one has more Iodine per drop than competitors that I’ve researched. You can find it at Nature’s Grocers, New Frontiers and probably may other health food stores. I attribute this to the elimination of several symptoms that I had prior to using the drops. I had been conducting my own science experiment on my hair health because me and many others I know were all experiencing hair breaking off in 1″ segments and it curling up and pointing out in odd directions.

We thought it may be the increased use of Hair Straighteners, burning the hair, however I was also losing mine at an astonishing rate as pictured in past posts. I went from losing hundreds in a single washing to only 14 from only 1 drop, when I should have been taking 1 dropper full of the Atomodine!

I also went from not being able to walk around the block without fear of twisting and ankle – couldn’t reach my toes, had lost all of my flexibility and suddenly got it back from again, 1 drop.

I had an incredible, almost superhuman amount of stamina and strength from -1- drop!

I have better mood, a clearer mind, more energy, less wrinkles, clearer voice, more range in my singing voice, eyesight improved and has stayed steady for years, hair doesn’t break any longer, stopped losing hair so much I can clean my brush once a week and see what I use to lose in one brushing and the list goes on…..

I am allowed only a small amount of liquids on my flights and I always use up part of that with my bottle of Atomodine for fear of all of that changing should I stop.

If you choose to add this to your diet, please first, write down all that you notice about yourself right now. Make a list of all of your symptoms and then list the pain or annoyance level from 1-10. After 1 day, choose the level for that issue and continue then weekly and remember that it took a few years for my hair to reach the point it is now, it took time to grow back.  Here’s an article and location to purchase if you’re unable to run out right now and buy yourself some. http://amaluxherbal.com/affiliated/atomidine.htm
atomodine UPDATE: I switched from Atomodine to IOSOL iosol

BIOTIN $21 (Buy one get one free sales happen often at CVS Pharmacy)

I purchase a Biotin vitamin capsule (non wheat) I use the cellulose capsules because of exposure risk of Tocopherol derived from one of my allergens, used to release vitamins from molds. I purchased Nature’s Bounty and ingested 5,000mcg/day for about 1 year. I recently discovered I can take 10,000mcg/day and began that dose in December, 2013. I’ll make notes if I see any changes.

NAILS = I had ridges on the surface of my nails that clearly stop when taking Biotin and when I stop for a few days they reappear. Proof to me we/I need this vitamin and know that they are not all created equal – this one works!

Hair is thicker Atomidine stopped the breakage and fall out but Biotin seemed to give rebirth to all of my hair follicles and now, after a year of being diligent about taking it daily, my hair is officially longer than it has ever been in my lifetime and so thick it’s almost laughable if I don’t use my process to control it’s natural curl.

2 Family members at a recent gathering, where we shared a home yelled out WOW! Your hair looks like a lion’s mane! (I don’t like that but love having the hair back)

There have been cases of Biotin causing Cystic Acne from taking Biotin supplements. If you begin getting large pustules on your face, cease taking the supplements. As I’ve mentioned, each BODY is different. We all have a similar bio-system – not identical, so you need to pay attention to your body and your body’s reaction to each change you make. 🙂

I use Mother’s Bragg Brand unfiltered (keep it as natural as you can) however, I’ve used other’s in the past with similar results and it’s great for cleaning.
I cannot sing this enough praises! Set aside the fact it stopped my feet from unbearable pain, the fact it makes your stomach feel GREAT! This product is like drinking “LIFE” but is a bit tough to swallow. Here’s an article that speaks from the medical practice’s view on the subject. There are some cautions to take that I’d not seen on any other site about risk of lowering your potassium levels, so be sure to add banana’s to you diet. I eat one each day for breakfast, it’s a safe food but have found that if I don’t eat an organic banana, I get heartburn… odd

So, after you research your ACV risks – know this, I LOVE IT! Nothing has affected me as much as this, for so many reasons but this post is about Hair, Skin & Nails, so here goes…

I place 2 TBSP of ACV into a glass and add my daily dose of Atomodine into the glass, add a bit of high quality cinnamon for it’s health benefits and then add equal parts of water. I sometimes add locally produced honey, to help with plant allergies but normally just add that into my baked bread. I drink this down (fast) and then wait about a minute before drinking an entire 16oz cup of room temp water.

The philosophy behind drinking it this way, is that you’re cleansing your body of most toxins early in the morning. Drink a little water at a time and the body doesn’t know that there is plenty of water around so, it stores water with toxins inside body tissue. By drinking a large glass in less than 5 minutes, it signals the brain to release stored water because it believes there’s plenty and you’ll be running to the bathroom in minutes. It’s pretty much the way I consume my water most of the time, it’s time efficient, the body releases water faster so you’ll urinate longer and less often than if you drink a little all day long. (At least that’s proven true for me.) Since every (BODY) is different, I encourage you to make your own science/body experiments and see what works best for you.

Go ahead laugh! Yes, I use this because it’s one of very few skin ointments I can use with my list of allergens… Since egg, almond, lemon and wheat are in so many in one form or another and that ever frustrating life-threatening Wheat-based Tocopherol is in just about all bubble bath, lotions, perfumes, hair sprays, shampoos and conditioners. This is my hand and face cream and the only thing I place on my face other than my shampoo (used for hand soap throughout my home and no-one can tell) and ACV.

I wash off makeup, using shampoo (AVEENO GREEN BOTTLE=NO WHEAT) and follow up by using ACV as a skin toner and I go close to eyes as well – it removes the dark color around eyes but be cautious, it’s strong smelling and will burn your eyes.. I don’t believe it will do any damage to eyes, but it will for sure burn (feeling wise) if it gets in. I’ve gotten it in my eyes countless times with no lingering symptoms. I am so happy with the look and tightness of my skin around my eyes, I will continue to use it and smile through the burn. 🙂 I remember when my daughter (makeup artist) did my makeup for a TV spot and she had to lift my brow to place eye shadow because the skin was sagging and loose. Now, it’s tight and I see better because the skin isn’t sagging and weighing down on the eye.

After cleansing with shampoo, toning both hands and face with ACV, I follow up by rubbing the Medicated Chapstick all over. My face and hands have lost age spots and the veins that show our age on the top of our hands reduce in size, the skin brightens and evens out. After al lthe toning with ACV I do facial muscle exercises (a blog for another day) as I rub in the Medicated Chapstick. Be sure to add a lot around the crows feet so you can say “bye-bye” crows feet tomorrow!

— Eating healthy foods, drinking more than the recommended amount of water, sleep and staying stress-free by adding music to my day, seeing all of you smiling back at me at shows, my loving family is why I’m looking younger today than yesterday. (((HUGS)))

Spray it on?

This photo is a brand of oil you can spray on your food – it is not part of this article but in essence shows exactly what a release agent spray on a candy mold, bread mold or any other food related mold is doing. You are eating the oil that has been sprayed onto the pan and then the food cooks within that oil. So, what’s in the spray? Shouldn’t we all know all of the ingredients that are within the can? Be informed and should you suddenly be allergic to a food you weren’t before, could it be the spray used to make the food look pretty?
A friend on my Facebook page asked me about my blog and stated that her face was swollen shut and they still don’t know what caused it and it reminded me about release agents. I have mentioned them before but continue to research and thought I’d share my post to her here:

I had a tootsie roll one night and had symptoms similar to advanced stages of Cerebral Palsy. I couldn’t walk, and according to their website, there is nothing in that candy that I’m allergic to… I wrote them and they admitted they use a release agent with Tocopherol Stearate in it. Tocopherol is Vitamin E, however that vitamin is not extracted from the same plant every time. I was able to eat these in the past – entire bags of them, with -0- symptoms and now -1- will knock me down! I tried vegan candy from the healthfood store and it also had -0- allergens and only Tocopherol, to attribute my passing out in less than a minute.

I ingest my Vitamin E using Red Palm oil, Sunflower Oil and Safflower oils.. or foods that contain these foods. It’s this spray-on release agent used to release the candy that has me concerned. They list it as food-safe and it sounds like a good idea – but just where is the Vitamin E coming from in some of these sprays? Yes, I’m allergic to wheat – but honestly it never affected my neurological function in the past, so I’m wondering – is there a new nut or plant that is being used in this spray that they are hiding under the Tocopherol name? Is it safe?

This is only one gray area in the ingredient lists that we are finally getting on our food packages There is serious need for them to also explain where they get the ingredient from – which food, or worse,, is it synthetic and chemically generated and still called the same thing? I’d prefer not to die just to keep food from sticking on a pan.

This site speaks of names that are in other countries but it shows the vastness of the situation with regards to natural vs. chemical. I’m going to study this site more and am diligently trying to find out how many different plants are used to create Tocopherol to hopefully uncover why it has such a serious affect on me. http://www.dermnetnz.org/reactions/e-numbers.html

Welcome Back Eye Lashes!

I was just reminded about the fact that my eye lashes were all but gone, I thought it was due to using water-proof mascara (I don’t anymore) and stopped as a result. I have been enjoying not having to try to fill in the gaps between them but had forgotten how few remained before I stopped eating foods that I was allergic to.

If you’re losing yours, if your eyelash area itches, it may be something you’re eating…..

No more acrylic nails for me! :)

For the last 20 or so years, I’ve had acrylic covering my nail beds. You may think it was for glamour sake, however it was more than that.

Because my business keeps my hands under the camera’s eye and the eyes of thousands, I did want my nails to look nice – mostly because bad looking nails is a distraction for the viewer. However the real reason I began applying it over my nails were because my nails:

  1. Were thin. (thinner than anyone in my family)
  2. Bent backward if I pushed against things.
  3. Nail beds were shaped so that the nails went up at the ends instead of downward. (the only one in my family with nail beds that shape)
  4. Nail beds were tender to the touch. (slightest tap would cause severe pain)
  5. Nails split in layers. (peeled like there were layers on top of each other instead of one solid nail)
  6. Nails tore. (so easily that I couldn’t even scratch myself without them bending back and tearing)

Now, after several months of not eating any of my food allergies, my nails are strong, they are healing from years of applying acrylic and even the area that has been filed down is stronger than my original nails were. I can tap the top of the thin areas and there is no pain!

I have been using a glue on nail (not sanding nail bed) to cover the ugly nails that remain, but the new growth is young strong looking nails!

This is very exciting, I’ve never wanted to wear them and am finally free of the process. I knew each time I breathed in the smell, I was hurting my lungs and am so grateful to finally not have to inhale it.

Interesting to find such odd symptoms going away revealing themselves to me after 48 years of eating foods that I was allergic to….. so wonderful and so shocking.

Source for Eating Healthy

Visit this facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001066604087 and you’ll be happy you did…

I began using their pans 5 months ago and cannot recommend them enough! Mich Elle, will teach you how to make better food choices and educate you on why the pans make you healthier and the clean up is So EASY!

I couldn’t believe, this past Thanksgiving, how much faster everything cooked! Turkey took 2 hours less and was juicy and tender and the amount of broth left over is astounding! I also was astonished with the mashed potatoes…….. you slice them up – rinse them off and then….. DO NOT ADD WATER! Yep, no water added and they cooked to perfection~

Why is the NO WATER added so wonderful…? Because, water takes out nutrients and then you pour it down the drain! Not with these pans…..

If that isn’t enough, cooking food above 200 degrees kills good bacteria and strips food of its vital nutrients, cooking with these, allows you to cook at lower temps – and that also saves you on energy bills….

Clearly a win-win for me, I hope you enjoy learning from Mich Elle, she’s amazing and my niece 🙂

Toast and Jam anyone?

First you need bread…..

My food allergies prevent me from using the following ingredients:

  • NO Wheat Flour (Gluten = a long string protein)
  • NO Eggs (entire egg)

This first loaf I baked with my newly acquired Breadman Bread Machine was interesting at-best. My bread was extremely dense and felt like it weighed 5 pounds! It was amazingly tasty though but by the looks alone, would never sell in a grocery store bread isle. I didn’t finish eating that rubbery loaf, before trying my hand at another and my first attempt at a box brand.

Gluten Free, allergy free bread mix used

It doesn’t end up looking like the picture on the box if you have to eliminate eggs however, it’s pretty good compared to my attempts at baking my own recipe.

Successful bread despite no wheat gluten and eggs

I eliminated eggs by adding 2 Tbsp corn starch and 4 tbsp warm water and I opted to add milk in-place of water in attempts to add food content to the bread. Next loaf I’ll make with water to see if the bread itself becomes lighter. I also added a tbsp of onion powder to add a rich flavor without overpowering the taste of the bread.

Next….. JAM

When I was in Elementary school, we were treated to a field trip to Knott’s Berry Farm. This was long before it became the amusement park attraction it is today. Nonetheless, I was affected by this trip in a lifelong life-altering way. I remember learning about their new and exciting accomplishment, the “Boysenberry” . You may believe that there are boysenberries littering the hillsides of some coastal cities ripening as you read this, but that berry never existed before Knott’s Berry Farm created it.

They took 2 plants, 1-Rasberry & 1-Black Berry and spliced the two plants together creating this milder, sweeter berry. The tartness you taste when biting into the rasberry is notable and the blackeberry in it’s mild nature combined create a full-bodied smoother tasting berry. Unfortunately, we cannot run to the store and pick up a box of Boysenberries, so I am attempting to create that taste in my own jam. I would love to buy Knott’s Berry Farms Boysenberry jam, however they use LEMON JUICE and that is one of my allergies.

Toast and Jam wasn’t something I ate much, it was a painful meal for me my entire lifetime. I could feel the gluten cutting through my esophagus and the lemon juice – heart burn that followed reminded me throughout the day that “Toast and Jam” = “pop a heartburn pill” or suffer.

I was pleased to see how simple it was to make Jam, it’s basically only Fruit + Sugar… unless you want to “cut the sweetness” with lemon or add citrus to preserve the fruit. I opted to not add a citrus to this jar. However I canned the remaining jam with a bit of lime juice to preserve the jam once opened.

Gluten Free - Lemon Free Berry Jam

I added some Xanthum gum to add thickness to the jam, you can also add corn starch combined with water, during the heating process.

Clare Rowley's Gluten Free & Lemon Free Toast and Jam

This morning, my first toast with jam in over 5 months and I have:

  • No esophageal pain
  • No heartburn

I’m thinking about having a second piece ♥

Statistics on Food Allergies within the US

The following link is a report covering studies from the US alone and I believe, after my experience, that many more people suffer with food allergies without their knowledge. http://www.foodallergy.org/files/FoodAllergyFactsandStatistics.pdf

Movies frequently depict a person suffering an  Anaphylaxic episode with outward signs including exaggerated swelling on the face and neck. It is unrealistic as depicted in this photo of movie star and comedian Martin Short, in the movie “Pure Luck” with co-star Danny Glover.

Or Will Smith in the movie “Hitch” as shown here:

I’m not saying some people don’t experience this extreme swelling from eating foods they’re allergic to. In-fact, my tongue was swollen so often that I got braces to increase the space in my lower jaw to allow more room for it, I had a bee sting on my pinky-finger that proceeded to cause my entire arm and neck to swell. What I’m saying is that it doesn’t always happen, sometimes you simply have what appears to be an asthma attack and you can show no outward signs of Anaphylaxis but in-fact be experiencing it and putting your life at risk.

I hope this helps you see why I went most of my life suffering food allergies without knowing and save you from thinking that you or someone you love simply has Asthma.

New page on Symptoms

This page talks about my allergies, the symptoms I experiences, things I’ve learned and the entire allergy symptom list for each allergen. I hope this page helps you deal with your allergy or those of someone you love and care for. This is a challenging thing but much better life choice, to eat what’s good for us instead of what is available. Feeling good improves life in ways you won’t know unless you take your life and health into your own hands. Empowerment!

Grilled Shrimp & Bean Quesadillas Wheat & Gluten Free

Wheat free, Gluten Free, Egg free, Tomato free, Garlic free Quesadillas

Mexican food that doesn't hurt

Wheat free and Gluten free Tortillas

Safe ingredients make it fun to eat again!Tasty Tortillas

Refried Beans

1 – can of beans you’d like to use for your mix. In this recipe I used Kidney beans. (high in iron and fiber) Substitute with black beans or pinto.

  • Cook on low heat in 1/2 cup water or broth. (If using a broth be sure there are no allergens within yours – check online to be sure as there are hidden ingredients not listed on the package. Some broth companies say vegetables and I’ve found that ALL pre-packaged soups and broths contain 1-carrots and 2-garlic and many include Wheat Gluten.
  • Once beans are soft, squash them into a paste.
  • Add whole whipping cream, plain Kefir or Cream Cheese to smooth.
  • Chop into 1/4″ squares 1/2 cup white onion and add to beans
  • Add 1/3 cup water or broth.
  • Season using safe seasonings for your allergy. (I create my own spice blends using a coffee grinder)
  • Add 1.4 cup shredded or cubed cheddar Cheese and stir till blended.
  • Add diced jalapenos (do not use marinated jalapenos if you have carrot or garlic allergy)

Avocado Cilantro Salsa

  • In a small mixing bowl add 1/4 cup diced avocado (per serving)
  • Add 3 table spoons of chopped Cilantro Leaf
  • Cut lime into 8ths and squeeze the juice from one section over mixture
  • Set aside

Jalapeno Chili Cream Cheese

  • After removing shrimp from pan, take peppers and remaining sauce and place in a small mixing bowl
  • Add 1/3 cup Cream Cheese per serving
  • Add 1 tbsn diced jalapeno pepper
  • Add chili powder (be sure to check label on bottle because many chili powders also contain garlic)
  • Set aside

Grilled Shrimp

  • Choose the number of shrimp per person (6 were used in this recipe)
  • Place a tbsp of sunflower, sesame or grape seed oil into pan heat to medium tempurature
  • Add 1 tbsp of minced jalapeno peppers
  • Add 1 tbsp of Chili powder
  • Add 1 tsp of onion powder (use garlic if you are not allergic)
  • Add 1/4 cup white wine
  • Add 1 tbsp Butter
  • Once shrimp is white (fully cooked)
Place Tortilla on a warm plate. If you want to warm tortilla, wet a paper towel and heat it up in a microwave or use hot water and lay in on top. Microwaving the tortilla could cause it to become gummy or chewy.
  • Spread the re-fried bean substitute over the tortilla.
  • Sprinkle cheese of choice onto beans and cover with a plate (cheese will melt)
  • Lay grilled shrimp on center of tortilla
  • Apply the Jalapeno Cream Cheese to one side along the shrimp
  • Apply the Avocado Cilantro salsa along opposite side of shrimp
  • Serve

**** Be sure to read the ingredients on your shredded cheese – some companies add wheat, potato starch and corn starch to keep the pieces from sticking to one another in the bag. When in doubt, shred your own.

Wheat, Gluten, egg, nut free Yummy Brownies – Recipe

I’ve never in my 48 years, ever been able to enjoy a brownie until today!
I started with a pre-mix brownie mix from:
The Cravings Place – Ooey Gooey Cholcolatey Chewy Brownie Mix. It is Gluten, wheat, nut, dairy, egg free.

In a large mixing bowl

  • Add 1/3rd cup apple sauce –
  • Add 3tbsp butter, 1/3 Cup heavy whipping Cream 3tbsp vanilla
  • Melt their chocolate chunks within the water they call for.
  • Mix the premix and other ingredients together using a fork.
  • Spray Pam on the pan and pour mixture into a cake pan.
  • Using a deeper dish (holds moisture better)
  • Bake at 350 for about 20 minutes –
  • Stab the center of the brownies using a wooden toothpick until it came out clean
  • Allow to cool
  • Remove from cake pan using a plate to hold contents in tact as you flip- it over to release it.
  • Using another plate (same size and type) Flip the cake back over so the top as it was cooking is on top (it’s prettier)
  • Create your frosting as show below

  • Mix 1/2 cup softened cream cheese with 1/3 cup Nutella
  • Add 1/4 cup Good Life gluten, egg, nut free chocolate chips to that and spread it over….

*** If you are also dairy intolerant or allergic substitute the dairy product with additional apple sauce. (mixture should be thick but not dry)
